Edward Snowdon and the NSA

1, Who is Edward Snowden?

Edward snowdon is a former National Security Agency contractor who revealed activity from the US intelligence as they were surveilling peoples phones and internet activity.

2, Do you think Edward Snowden was right to leak the documents that he did?

I feel that there is always a fine line between making things public or keeping them as a secret. It is my opinion that the public should know that their secret information is being looked at and what is secret should be kept that way which is in favour of Snowdon coming out publicly which in a way these people deserve to know.

In an interview Facebook lawyer Ted Ullyot had this to say between any links with Facebok and the NSA:

“As of today, the government will only authorise us to communicate about these numbers in aggregate, and as a range, For the six months ending 31 December 2012, the total number of user-data requests Facebook received was between 9,000 and 10,000, relating to between 18,000 and 19,000 accounts.”

He also said

“With more than 1.1 billion monthly active users worldwide, this means that a tiny fraction of 1% of our user accounts were the subject of any kind of US state, local, or federal US government request.”

“We frequently reject such requests outright, or require the government to substantially scale down its requests, or simply give the government much less data than it has requested,”

On the other hand, there will be a reason why the US intelligence is looking at this information which will mainly be for the protection of the country and maybe even the world. Sometimes people are better not knowing about things as public knowledge can disrupt the secrecy of their actions siting the Area 51 case as an example of this.

3, What is the argument in defence of Snowden?

Zoe Lofgren US congresswoman- “Have a constitution and it provides that the American people are protected from unreasonable searches and seizures unless there is a warrant. That system in the constitution has gone seariously off the wheels.”

4, What is the opposing argument?

Stewart Baker former NSA general counsel- “In the end we cannot be transparent about most of these issues and we have to get comfortable with the idea that we are delegating to somebody the ability to learn the secrets to review whats being done and to determine wether its being done properly we cannot simply bring everybody off the street and tell them whats happening.”

4, Can we have freedom and privacy in today’s interconnected world?

Chris Soghoian Principle technologist – “The NSA sort of perform two kinds of surveillance. They Perform Dragnets surveillance of everyones communications and they perform targeted surveillance of individual communications. And if the NSA wants to get into your computer or phone their going to get in and there really isn’t any way to stop them.”

5, What would you do if you were the journalist Snowden contacted and why?
